Raising vital funds for research at Barrow
The queen of Barrow fundraisers is the Barrow Grand Ball, presented in January by the Barrow Women’s Board. Despite a sagging economy, the 2009 Ball, held Jan. 16 at the Arizona Biltmore, raised more than $2.5 million. In all, the Barrow Grand Ball has raised about $38.5 million for Barrow in just 45 years.
Proceeds from the Ball support a wide variety of research projects at the institute, providing important funding for promising and innovative scientific studies.
The Barrow Women's Board was established in 1965 to raise funds for research at Barrow Neurological Institute and to foster community interest in supporting the fledgling neuroscience center. The group's first fundraiser was a masqued ball at Casa Blanca Inn on New Year’s Eve. The event netted $26,000.
The Women's Board also sponsors Education Day in February to increase public awareness of the research, medical education, and patient care going on at Barrow Neurological Institute.
The 2011 Ball is scheduled to be held in January at the Arizona Biltmore.
