Well positioned to explore and expand DBS
Barrow Neurological Institute
is recognized throughout the world as a major referral center that offers the latest surgical techniques for difficult and complex brain and spine problems. Barrow perfected the cardiac standstill operation, a procedure that puts the human body in a state of suspended animation in order to correct life-threatening aneurysms; the institute has performed more of these technically challenging surgeries than any other center in the world. Doctors and researchers at Barrow have pioneered many other cutting-edge procedures, techniques, and devices, including endovascular procedures, innovative approaches into the brain, and stents and other devices designed specifically for the brain and spine.
Barrow also led the development of deep brain stimulation as an effective therapy for Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and other movement disorders. Physicians at the institute participated in trials of DBS in the late 1990s, and since then Barrow neurosurgeons have performed hundreds of DBS procedures, successfully relieving the symptoms of these destructive disorders.
The Center for Adaptive Brain Function is the next step in the development of DBS, and Barrow is well positioned to fully leverage this promising technique for some of mankind’s most difficult neurological disorders. Countless people throughout the world may well benefit tomorrow from what we do at Barrow today.
Please help Barrow maintain its historic leadership role in neuromedicine and open a new medical frontier in neuroscience by making a gift to Barrow Neurological Foundation’s campaign to create the Center for Adaptive Brain Function.
