Friends come together each spring to raise money for Barrow
Doug Griffin was just 30 years old when he passed away from brain cancer. He left behind Kristen, his high school sweetheart and wife of eight years, and his one-year-old son, James. Doug had battled an inoperable, malignant brain tumor for a year and a half.
Doug and Kristen both attended Dobson High School in Mesa, and then settled in Gilbert to raise their family. A few months before Doug passed away, Jim Stringham, of Gilbert, and Kevin Sheehan, of Queen Creek, who were both friends of Doug’s since junior high school, along with some of his high school friends from Dobson, organized a golf tournament to help raise money to assist Doug and Kristen with their medical bills.
Jim and Kevin continue to honor Doug’s memory with the annual Fore A Friend Golf Tournament, which celebrated its fifth year in 2009. The tournament was held Saturday, May 9 at Lone Tree Golf course in Chandler, Arizona. The event benefitted Barrow Neurological Institute, where Doug was treated. The 2009 tournament resulted in a donation of $5,700 to the center.
