August 3, 2009 - St. Joseph’s Foundation and Barrow Neurological Foundation are pleased to announce the addition of two new members to its boards.

Booker T. Evans, a lawyer specializing in white collar criminal defense and commercial litigation at Phoenix’s Greenberg Traurig, joined Barrow’s board of trustees, and Hamilton Espinoza, a contractor for DPR Construction, Inc., joined St. Joseph’s board of directors for this fiscal year. Both new members reside in Phoenix.

In addition, the board of St. Joseph’s Foundation made changes to its officers. Richard A. Horn, retired, of Paradise Valley, became the chair, with Michael Medici, president, SmithGroup, AZ, Inc., of Paradise Valley, becoming vice chair, Michelle Matiski, senior vice president of Legal Affairs, at Schaller Anderson, Inc. and Aetna Co., of Phoenix becoming treasurer, and Kelly J. Barr, manager of Regulatory Affairs and Contracts for SRP, also of Phoenix, becoming secretary. Christine Wilkinson, Ph.D., is the past chair of the board.

Armen Ervanian became an emeritus member of the Barrow board, and Joan Shapiro became an emeritus member of the St. Joseph’s board.

The mission of the foundations is to raise funds to support St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Barrow Neurological Institute, particularly to fund research, education, clinical care, and outreach efforts.

A board member offers expertise and experience from a variety of fields and lends prestige to the organization. Specifically, board members contribute to the stewardship and fund-raising effectiveness of the foundations in several areas including: helping to plan and organize its fund-raising strategy, insuring that funds entrusted to the foundations are managed in a prudent manner and allocated according to the wishes of donors, and making a personal financial commitment to the institution.

Enthusiasm on the part of board members is essential to the Foundation’s ultimate success. Board members serve as advocates of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and the Barrow Neurological Institute in the community.
