Foundatain Hills support groups raises funds for Barrow
A check for $2,000 was presented to Abraham N. Lieberman, MD, on April 6 to benefit the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC) and Movement Disorder Clinic at Barrow Neurological Institute.
The donation, made by the Fountain Hills Parkinson Support Group, was presented during a special luncheon at the Fountain Hills Community Center.
Over the past two and a half years, the Fountain Hills group has collected more than $6,600 in pennies through their fundraiser, “Pennies for Parkinson’s – Until There’s a Cure,” with 100 percent of the money raised supporting Parkinson’s research at MAPC at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
This remarkable Parkinson’s disease support group, residing in a town of 22,000, has enlisted the support of friends, neighbors and sixteen local businesses who have collected more than 600,000 pennies in less than three years.
Tom Mazzotta, who chairs the pennies effort, said people also donate silver coins and paper currency to the group and that one man even donated three buckets of pennies recently.
“We have been delighted to help the Fountain Hills group build their educational activities, and we really appreciate their support,” says Margaret Anne Coles, program manager.
