D-backs Race Against Cancer
(April 2015) - The Barrow Brain Tumor Team—27 members strong—will run in the 2015 D-backs Race Against Cancer on Saturday, May 2, to celebrate those who survive brain tumors and to demonstrate that there is hope. The race is sponsored by the University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Among those participating is Sarah Stanford, a 10-year survivor of a large glioblastoma, perhaps the most lethal of all cancers. She will be running in her first 5K with her son, Joshua, now 14. “The 10-year mark was a crossing point for me,” she says. “For so many years I thought, ‘Okay, let’s just get through this year. Who knows what tomorrow’s going to bring?’ I’m finally able to start planning for the future and hoping that I can be around for grandchildren.”
Kris Smith, MD, the Barrow neurosurgeon who operated on Stanford and Charlotte Myers, a nurse practitioner who works with Dr. Smith, along with 24 other people—including brain tumor survivors and every person who works in Dr. Smith’s office—will compete on the Barrow team.
The 2015 D-backs Race Against Cancer begins and ends at Chase Field, with a 7:30 a.m. start. The event includes a 5K and a 1-mile Banana Boat Family Fun Walk. The third annual event will benefit Arizona non-profits that provide screening, treatment and support for those dealing with all types of cancer. To register, visit dbacks.com/race.
