Walkers turn out in droves to support brain tumor research
The 13th annual Phoenix SSBTR Walk-a-thon was held Feb. 22, 2014 at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale.
Paricipants enjoyed a beautiful day and a great turnout of at least 1,500 students and adults, according to event organizers.
The student-run organization has enjoyed growth in recent years: A running event was held at Desert Vista High School in fall 2012, as well as one at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Several fundraising events were organized at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona medical school in Phoenix held a gala for SSBTR in January 2013. Additionally, several elementary schools organized events.
The numbers involved with the organization are also experiencing growth, as the University of Denver has started a chapter this year, joining the Phoenix group and chapters from Northern Arizona University, Connecticut and New Jersey that all raise funds for SSBTR.
For information about next year's event, or to make a donation, visit the group's website, www.ssbtr.org or call 888-SSBTR-AZ (888-772-8729). The group also is looking for corporate sponsors for the future events.
Funds raised from the walk-a-thons benefit Barrow Neurological Foundation and other groups supporting brain tumor research.
