Golfers at the Lou Grubb Friends Fore Golf event

One of the longest running and most treasured charitable golf tournaments in the Valley, Lou Grubb Friends Fore Golf celebrates the generosity and support from the community and honors the memory of respected automotive businessman Lou Grubb and his wife Evelyn. Hundreds of golfers turn out to play Lou’s favorite game and raise funds to benefit patient care, education and research at Barrow Neurological Institute and St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center.

The Lou Grubb Friends Fore Golf event takes place annually at the beautiful JW Marriott Camelback Golf Club. Following the tournament, golfers and their guests are invited to a fun and relaxing after-party and awards program at the clubhouse, where they can enjoy refreshing drinks, fun yard games, and lively music.

How it began

Lou Grubb Friends Fore Golf has a long history. In 1986, Mr. Grubb suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. His family chose to take him to St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center to receive treatment at Barrow, where they knew he would receive the best care. Dr. Robert Spetzler, former Barrow President and CEO and Neurosurgery Emeritus Chair, operated and removed the aneurysm in Mr. Grubb.

Following treatment, Mr. Grubb appreciated 25 more years of life, enjoying family, friends and his favorite game – golf. He was so grateful that he designated Barrow and St. Joseph’s to receive all funds raised by the annual golf tournament he had established in 1975 to support local charities. In the past four decades, the event has raised $6 million dollars to elevate patient care, medical education and research at Barrow Neurological Institute.
