Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation

Womens Board

In 1962, Barrow Neurological Institute was conceived by three visionaries: Charles A. Barrow, Sister Mary Placida, and John R. Green, M.D. Under the leadership of Drs. Green, Spetzler, and Lawton, Barrow has grown from blueprints into one of the foremost neurological institutes in the world.

Three years after the dedication of the Barrow Neurological Institute, the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation was established, with Lou Davenport Case appointed as the first Chair. Drs. John Green and Loyal Davis selected the original 27 members to serve on this Board. These women brought a passion for funding neurological research while fostering interest in the community and the need for financial support for the Institute.

Today, the Women’s Board has flourished into a group of 80 steadfast philanthropists whose members and donors have raised more than $135 million to support research at Barrow Neurological Institute.

The generous philanthropy of the Women's Board through the Barrow Grand Ball drives cutting-edge innovation and research that is critical to advancing our mission of saving lives.

Barrow Grand Ball

In a storied tradition dating back to 1965, the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation holds the Barrow Grand Ball each year to celebrate Barrow Neurological Institute’s far-reaching medical research and innovative treatments, and to thank all the generous donors who support its mission.

From the first Ball held on New Year’s Eve in 1965 at Paradise Valley’s former Casa Blanca Inn, which netted $26,000, exceptional women in the Phoenix community have stepped forward to carry on this legacy. Since then, the Women’s Board has raised more than $135 million through its annual Barrow Grand Ball, thanks to the generosity of its members and the community.

The 2026 Barrow Grand Ball raised an extraordinary $11.4 million to support neuroscience research at Barrow Neurological Institute.

The 2027 Barrow Grand Ball will be held at the Arizona Biltmore on January 23, 2027.

Women’s Board Project

In 2006, the Women’s Board began a tradition of funding a specific research project on behalf of its members. These projects have been chosen to highlight key areas of research at Barrow that are not only innovative, but also make a measurable impact on patients’ lives. To date, the Women’s Board has raised over $17 million in support of these projects.

For the 2027 Ball, the Women’s Board has selected the new Sleep Center. Better sleep means better overall health. Yet, millions of people live with undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorders that significantly impact their daily lives and long-term well-being. The Sleep Center, led by Dr. Joyce K. Lee-Iannotti, is on a mission to mitigate the impact of sleep disorders through identifying, treating, and understanding the very conditions that affect sleep and everyday functions.

Support from the Women’s Board Project will fund an innovative Barrow Sleep Blue Zone Project, which aims to study sleep as a critical, yet underexplored, factor in health aging, inspired by the “Blue Zones” concept of communities with exceptional longevity. Through developing evidence-based sleep strategies and creating the first real-world dataset linking the Blue Zone exposome, sleep quality, and healthy neurological aging, the project has the potential to reduce the risk of stroke, dementia, and neurodegenerative disease, and improve cognitive performance and quality of life.
