👏 Congratulations to Briana Ondatje, a fourth-year PhD student in the Arizona State University-Barrow Interdisciplinary Graduate Program. Briana was recently awarded the Ruth L. Kirchstein National Research Service Award (NRSA, F31), a predoctoral fellowship from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her thesis for this recent award focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Briana is a Fast-Track awardee from Barrow Neurological Foundation, which provides trainees critical funds for research and career development. Briana shares that her hope is "to continue my work in neurodegeneration by searching for therapeutic interventions that will halt disease progression and reverse it in not only ALS but other neurodegenerative diseases as well." We are inspired to witness your generosity transform the future of neuroscience through her work!

During their first #ALS Clinic visit, many patients feel overwhelmed with the amount of information presented. The Gregory W. Fulton ALS Center at Barrow Neurological Institute recognized this and, with donor support, developed EssentiALS - a Personalized ALS Resource Center! Available on the Barrow website, it prompts patients to take a brief quiz and then provides tailored educational resources that reflect their current stage in the disease. What happens after a miraculous skull-to-spine reattachment? For the surgeon who performed the famous operation, Volker K.H. Sonntag, MD, emeritus professor of neurosurgery at Barrow, it became clear that there was a strong need to better understand the underlying mechanical principles of the spine to continue advancing surgical techniques. This led to the inception of the Spine Biomechanics Lab in 1983!
Today, Barrow experts in the Sonntag Spine Center are fulfilling this vision, developing new surgical techniques and technologies and leading the way in cutting-edge digital imaging to help surgeons improve treatment and maximize patient outcomes and quality of life.
