This month is Men’s Mental Health Month, a time to recognize mental health and overall well-being. 🧠
Neurological diseases have a profound effect on both patients and their loved ones. Although male caregivers often report similar levels of burden as female caregivers, men often struggle more with help-seeking, expressing emotions, and self-care.
The specialists at @BarrowNeuro emphasize the importance of finding the right support systems early on and offer resources and guidance to do so. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, areas such as the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center and the Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders Program offer specialized support groups, educational workshops and seminars, and respite services to make the journey easier on both patients and caregivers.

Repost @BarrowNeuro // Just six months into her dream job as a veterinarian, Dr. Nisha Parasher found herself on a medical leave that would last more than two years due to daily #migraine attacks.
But when she arrived at the #LewisHeadacheCenter at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute in #Phoenix, #Arizona, she finally felt heard and finally received answers. And thanks to her multidisciplinary team of clinicians at Barrow, Nisha has returned to work with a new, resilient perspective.

At @BarrowNeuro, yoga is a powerful tool for healing, balance, and reclaiming movement for many with neurological disorders. Philanthropic support from our donors allows our team to offer this therapeutic resource across several programs to help patients manage pain, improve mobility, and boost overall well-being.
Whether it’s specialized headache yoga classes led by physical therapists at the Lewis Headache Center, movement-focused sessions through the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, or adaptive yoga initiatives within our Neuro-Rehabilitation Center, we are dedicated to helping patients find strength and mindfulness.

Repost @TheIvyBrainTumorCenter // June is #AphasiaAwarenessMonth, highlighting a condition that can affect how people communicate after brain tumor surgery. For Tim Soukup, a father of four and avid marathon runner, his life changed after brain tumor surgery left him with severe aphasia, unable to speak, read, or write.
Tim found strength through follow-up care in the intensive inpatient and outpatient neuro-rehabilitation program at @BarrowNeuro and its Aphasia Connections support group. Our specialists helped him rebuild his vocabulary, and today, despite the challenges that aphasia presents, Tim is flourishing.

This Father’s Day, we’re celebrating Bill Daggett, a father, husband, sculptor, and Parkinson’s warrior.
When Parkinson’s disease threatened to rob Bill of his ability to sculpt, Holly Shill, MD, FAAN, director of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at @BarrowNeuro, referred him to neurosurgeon Francisco Ponce, MD. Bill underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery with Dr. Ponce. Now, not only can Bill sculpt again, but he also has his smile, laugh, and voice back.
“I have hope now. Not just for myself, but for my children, grandchildren, and everyone else who may one day receive a Parkinson’s diagnosis.” - Bill Daggett

Repost @commonspiritphilanthropy // Today, we honor Juneteenth—a day of reflection, remembrance, and celebration of freedom, resilience, and progress.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as an opportunity to recognize the ongoing pursuit of equity, justice, and opportunity for all.

Last month, the Grants Committee of Barrow Neurological Foundation held its inaugural Research Symposium, featuring an interactive panel discussion moderated by Chief Scientific Officer Robert Bowser, PhD, and Chair of Neurology Brad Racette, MD, FAAN. Our panelists—Andrew Yang, MD, MS; Ashley Stokes, PhD; David Medina, PhD; and Ruchira Jha, MD, MSc—shared how Foundation grants helped them launch their research programs and pursue novel ideas that traditional funding can’t support.
Learn more about their work:
“Having a Foundation that supports internal grants that provide seed and start-up funding is crucial to moving ideas forward and generating data to get larger external grants as rapidly as possible. These grants are a cornerstone of success for research at Barrow.”
-Robert Bowser, PhD
