For many, the holidays are a time for laughter, family, and cheer. But for many others, the holidays present a unique set of challenges. In a recent article, Marwan Sabbagh, MD, FAAN, Moreno Family Chair for Alzheimer`s Research at Barrow Neurological Institute, offers his advice for those suffering from a neurological condition. Repost @theivebraintumorcenter ➡️ We are immensely proud to congratulate two of the Ivy Center`s very own, Dr. Erika Lewis and Maryam Gharehsheikhlou, PharmD., on receiving the prestigious BNF Fast Track Award!
The Fast-Track Awards provide critical funds for our trainees’ continued research and career development. These highly competitive awards allow each trainee to develop and run their own research project without going through the lengthy and uncertain process of applying for grants. We are excited to highlight and celebrate their achievements and are grateful to our donors for the opportunity to advance Barrow Neurological Institute’s mission!
We were honored to host a live brain surgery viewing event for Barrow Neurological Foundation donors, members of the Women’s Board, and Board of Trustees last week! Guests gathered in our state-of-the-art, donor-funded viewing room to watch Michael T. Lawton, MD, President and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute perform his craft. It was also very special to have Robert Spetzler, MD, with us, narrating the procedure and celebrating his birthday alongside our team. His presence underscored the mentorship and legacy that continue to shape the future of neurosurgery here.
#GivingTuesday is just TWO weeks away!!! On December 2nd, join the global day of generosity and make a difference. This year, we have an incredible opportunity to take your donation even further…

Join us in welcoming Dr. Sengua Koipapi - Barrow`s first neurosurgery observer funded by the Franke Global Neuroscience Education Center!
Thank you to the Franke family for your unwavering support of the continued development of #neuroscience, creating a platform for building neuroscience care and clinical education programs to reach, teach, and serve our colleagues in the developing world. Read more about Dr. Koipapi ⬇️
//Repost @barrowneuro// In September, we welcomed our first neurosurgery observer funded by the Franke Global Neuroscience Education Center. This is one of two clinical observership positions funded by the Franke family at Barrow Neurological Institute this year.
Dr. Sengua Koipapi is visiting Barrow for a total of three months from the United Republic of Tanzania in East Africa, where he has been training in neurosurgery at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (@taasisiyamifupa_moi). He expects to complete his training program in 2026 and begin his career as an attending neurosurgeon at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (@kcmc1971), a partnering site of Barrow Global and the institution where Dr. Koipapi completed his internship and general surgery residency.
Dr. Koipapi first learned about the observership opportunity at Barrow while exploring programs online. He said his experience at Barrow has fundamentally redefined his understanding of neurosurgical excellence—thanks to the Institute`s world-renowned clinicians and scientists, rigorous training, and cutting-edge research.
"To me, this experience is not a distant dream, but a blueprint," Dr. Koipapi said. "It proves what is achievable through dedication, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. I carry this blueprint with me as I prepare to return to Tanzania. Barrow is our North Star, and we are already taking our first steps in microneurosurgery, interdisciplinary collaboration, dedicated training, and a research-driven spirit. This journey is our proof that with a shared commitment, we can build an exciting future for neurosurgery at home."

A heartfelt thank you to The Sidney Poitier New American Film School and Pat Tillman Foundation for their powerful partnership in hosting the “Salute to Service” screening of “In Waves and War.” This event not only shed light on groundbreaking therapies but also brought together leaders like our very own Michele S. Gregory, MS, Chief Philanthropy Officer of Barrow Neurological Foundation, who was in attendance, and Michael T. Lawton, MD, President and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute, who was invited to lend his insights to the post-screening discussion. It’s through such collaborative efforts and philanthropic spirit that we can continue transforming lives and promote healing for our brave veterans.

On behalf of Barrow Neurological Foundation, thank you, for your unwavering support. Because of you, our experts can continue saving and transforming lives.
For many individuals recovering from a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, aneurysm or AVM rupture, or stroke, the journey doesn`t end when they leave the ICU. In fact, that`s often when a new set of challenges begin. That`s where The Center for Transitional Neuro-Rehabilitation (CTN) steps in...
As the final step in the neuro-rehabilitation continuum, the (CTN) at Barrow Neurological Institute provides various programs within a holistic milieu environment. Its goal is to empower patients to successfully transition back to their homes, communities, work, and school.
