Neuroscience Nursing Department

Support research and education for nurses specializing in neurological disorders.

Your Generosity Makes a Difference in Patients’ Lives

Patients and families depend on the compassion and expertise of Barrow neuroscience nurses during the most challenging times of their lives. While advancements in surgical techniques and technology help improve patient outcomes, our neuroscience nurses know there’s no substitute for the human touch, empathy, and care nurses offer. That’s why they treat every single patient with dignity and respect.

“Nurses care for people at their darkest, scariest, and loneliest moments. It is our privilege.”

Your Donations Help Elevate Patient Care

The neuroscience nursing program was established in 1962 on the day Barrow opened its first neurosurgical units. It had only 28 nurses on staff. Today, Barrow has more than 450 nurses and over 151 certified neuroscience registered nurses (CNRNs)—more than any other hospital in the world.

The Neuroscience Nursing Department prides itself on fostering a collaborative environment in which staff can enhance their skills, share insights, and ultimately elevate patient care. One of the ways they do this is through quality improvement research, which can include studies like the following:

  • Measuring the impact of advanced care nursing on stroke outcomes
  • Refining alert processes for hospitalized patients
  • Decreasing door-to-treatment time with triage checklists
  • Optimizing systemwide nursing assessment documentation
  • Improving post-discharge patient care materials

“I don’t know how I would have made it through those first few days after my AVM surgery without the kindness and compassion of the Barrow Neuro-ICU nurses. One nurse in particular, Virginia Prendergast, PhD, really made an impact and validated that nursing was the career path for me.”

Your Support Advances Neuroscience Nursing Education

Caring For The Caregivers

With support from the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation and generous donors, Barrow opened two resilience rooms (one active room and one quiet room) to address emotional burnout and stress. Nurses who regularly use these rooms have reported an almost 50% decrease in moderate burnout and emotional distress.
