Sleep Division
Donate to Sleep Disorder Care and Research
An estimated 1 in 3 Americans suffer from a sleep disorder, yet up to 80% remain undiagnosed. Sleep disturbances—insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome—are recognized as contributors to poor brain health. Left untreated, they can significantly elevate the risk of stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.
Like diet and exercise, sleep is a modifiable risk factor for neurological conditions, meaning an individual can lower their risk through lifestyle changes and medical intervention. Supporting the Sleep Division at Barrow will help fill a critical care gap—advancing early diagnosis, prevention, and research into sleep and brain health.
You Contribute to Life-Changing Research
Led by Joyce K. Lee-Iannotti, MD, FAAN, FAASM, the Barrow Sleep Division aims to become the premier sleep center in the Southwest.
The Sleep Division team is pioneering research to uncover how sleep disturbances contribute to brain diseases, identifying early intervention strategies and novel pathways for prevention.
A key research focus is REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), a condition in which individuals physically act out vivid, often unpleasant dreams. RBD is one of the earliest known markers of Parkinson’s disease, often appearing 10 to 20 years before the onset of motor symptoms. This offers a crucial window for early diagnosis.
With support from generous donors, this research holds the promise of transforming how we protect brain health in the long term—well before disease symptoms appear.
