Inspiring the Next Generation: High School & Undergraduate Internship Programs

Return to Impact Report

The Barrow High School and Undergraduate Internship Programs are made possible through the generosity of donors such as the Maurice & Meta Gross Foundation, the Garcia Family Foundation, and the Burton Family Foundation, as well as organizations sponsoring individual students. Led by Rita Sattler, PhD, these programs offer interns an immersive educational experience that deepens their understanding of the neuroscience field.

This past summer, our interns had the unique opportunity to conduct hands-on research under the mentorship of Barrow specialists. They also gained real-world applicable skills by attending physician-led seminars, technology workshops, and a career panel. At the end of each program, they presented their work to peers and faculty during a symposium.

  • 12 high school interns
  • 43 undergraduate interns
  • 26 universities represented
  • 29 Barrow mentors

How Your Generosity Made an Impact

Hands-on Research
Barrow interns worked side-by-side with physicians and scientists on complex research projects.

Tuesday Seminars
The weekly seminars featured two speakers from each department: one clinician and one scientist, allowing interns to see the critical role research plays in clinical care.

Neuroscience Technology Boot Camps
Neuroscience Technology Boot Camps allowed students to become familiar with state-of-the-art technologies integral to neuroscience research.

Career Day Panel
During the Career Day Panel and Q&A session, Barrow faculty and staff, medical students, and graduate students shared their experience and expertise with interns.

High School and Undergraduate Symposiums
At the culmination of the programs, high school and undergraduate students presented their research to peers and Barrow faculty.

With your support, our interns can experience a diverse range of departments, including:
