In 1988, 23-year-old Sarah Noonan (Neylon) was enjoying city life in Chicago, living independently, and starting a new job. But a devastating fall down a flight of stairs led to a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), changing her promising future in an instant. She placed her trust in the Center for Transitional Neuro-Rehabilitation (CTN), led by Pamela Klonoff, PhD.
Last May, 37 years after her accident, Sarah returned to Barrow to share her story with participants at the CTN. "I truly believe the CTN saved me. I still don’t know how I would have made it without that program, and I will always be grateful," she affirms.

This five-week internship provides high schoolers with an early opportunity to gain valuable exposure to scientific research under the mentorship of renowned Barrow faculty. In addition to roles in our neuroscience laboratories, this Program offers positions in academic publishing, marketing, philanthropy, neuro-rehabilitation, and other areas of Barrow Neurological Institute.

The Barrow High School and Undergraduate Internship Programs provide students with the unique opportunity to conduct hands-on research under the mentorship of Barrow specialists, gaining real-world applicable skills by attending physician-led seminars, technology workshops, and a career panel. Burke, MD, Director of the Barrow Alzheimer`s & Memory Disorders Program, uses AI-based digital cognitive tests in primary care clinics to enable earlier Alzheimer`s diagnosis and afford patients better access to therapies, research opportunities, and more. As of January 1, 2026, the Center for Transitional Neuro-Rehabilitation (CTN) at Barrow Neurological Institute reached a 40-year milestone. It is the world`s only holistic milieu program to have sustained its breadth of programming for four decades! 👏
The CTN emphasizes rebuilding patients` independence in the home and community, and their productivity when returning to work or school.
