-Kara May
Mother of grateful patient, Brielle May. Neurocritical Care
“My team at Barrow has never given up on me; I am better thanks to their care, and that means absolutely everything to me. Without them, I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am today. For that, I am incredibly grateful.”
-Alison Coombs
Grateful patient at the Lewis Headache Center
“The things my mom is doing for this trial have not only paid substantial dividends for her health but are also paving the way for someone else to have an easier journey. On Saturday, January 24, the Women`s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation raised a remarkable $11.4 million through the 61st Barrow Grand Ball! One of the most impactful ways the Women’s Board supports Barrow follows a 20-year tradition of selecting a critical area of research to receive special funding as the “Women’s Board Project.” The Board was proud to select the Ivy Brain Tumor Center, led by Dr. Nader Sanai, as this year’s project, raising $5.1 million through the Ball specifically to support brain cancer research.
"I am continually impressed by the commitment of the Women’s Board to funding cutting-edge research and innovation at Barrow Neurological Institute. Their generous support enables us not only to tackle the most urgent challenges in neuroscience but also to chase our lofty vision of understanding the workings of the mind. The Women’s Board is making a tangible difference in patients’ lives and transforming the future of medicine." - Michael T. Lawton, MD, President and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute.
Thank you to the Women`s Board for your unparalleled passion and dedication in supporting Barrow physicians, scientists, and clinicians in advancing research that saves lives and improves the quality of life.

Happy #NationalWomenPhysiciansDay! This day honors the pioneering achievements and ongoing contributions of female physicians in the field of health care. Here are just a few of the many talented women physicians, researchers, and surgeons who make a profound impact every single day at @barrowneuro. To all the brilliant women physicians not pictured, we hope you feel celebrated today, and every day!
Thank you for your tireless efforts, your unwavering commitment, and the extraordinary contributions you make to our patients` lives.
Andrew Yang, MD, director of the Epilepsy Surgery Program at Barrow Neurological Institute, and his collaborators, recently secured an NIH grant. Their research aims to demystify #abstractreasoning – how we use past knowledge to navigate new situations by generalizing and spotting similarities. Dr. Yang`s team investigates neural networks in the brain, collecting data from #epilepsy monitoring participants with stereoEEG (implanted electrodes). Similar research studies have uncovered fundamental truths about the human brain and mind.
Donor support enables Dr. Yang and his team to conduct studies like this - leading to breakthroughs in neuroscience research. Learn more about donor impact at Barrow: https://bar.rw/3LVml2T. 🔗 Link in bio!

Repost @barrowneuro// On Friday, Barrow Neurological Institute welcomed a special guest: neurosurgeon and @cnn Chief Medical Correspondent @drsanjaygupta.
Dr. Gupta sat down with Barrow President and CEO @michael_t_lawton, MD, in front of a packed auditorium at the Institute for a candid conversation.
Their one-hour talk touched on several thought-provoking topics, including both the rewarding and difficult aspects of having a bifurcated career, the importance of finding and nurturing what energizes you, and how artificial intelligence is challenging us to ask ourselves what makes us uniquely human.
We’re so grateful Dr. Gupta took the time to speak at Grand Rounds, meet with our neurosurgery residents, and tour our campus.
Not having control over your body can range from frustrating to frightening. For many patients, #ParkinsonDisease threatens their ability to do the things they love, and interferes with their day-to-day lives. Now, because of the incredible support from donors like you, patients with previously untreatable conditions are taking back control of their lives.

In 1988, 23-year-old Sarah Noonan (Neylon) was enjoying city life in Chicago, living independently, and starting a new job. But a devastating fall down a flight of stairs led to a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), changing her promising future in an instant. She placed her trust in the Center for Transitional Neuro-Rehabilitation (CTN), led by Pamela Klonoff, PhD.
Last May, 37 years after her accident, Sarah returned to Barrow to share her story with participants at the CTN. "I truly believe the CTN saved me. I still don’t know how I would have made it without that program, and I will always be grateful," she affirms.
